26/11 Conspirator Tahawwur Rana Extradited to India, Appears Before NIA Court
Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key figure accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has been extradited from the United States to India. The 64-year-old Pakistani-born Canadian national arrived in New Delhi late on April 9, 2025, aboard a special flight.
Upon arrival, Rana underwent a medical examination before being transported to the Patiala House Court, where he appeared before a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) judge. Following the court proceedings, he was remanded to judicial custody and is expected to be lodged in Tihar Jail.
Rana’s extradition marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to bring perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice. He is alleged to have collaborated closely with David Coleman Headley, another main conspirator of the attacks that claimed 166 lives. Indian authorities had been pursuing his extradition since 2020, a process that culminated after the U.S. Supreme Court denied his appeals against the transfer.
Security experts have emphasized the need for stringent measures during Rana’s incarceration, suggesting solitary confinement under high surveillance due to the international ramifications of his alleged crimes.
