Breaking: Justice BR Gavai Sworn In as 52nd Chief Justice of India: A Historic Milestone for Representation

In a landmark event on May 14, 2025, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.  Administered by President Droupadi Murmu, his appointment marks a significant moment in India’s judicial history as he becomes the first Buddhist and only the second individual from the Scheduled Castes to hold this esteemed position, following Justice KG Balakrishnan.

Justice Gavai’s ascension is not only a personal achievement but also a symbol of increased inclusivity and representation within the Indian judiciary.  His tenure is set to continue until November 23, 2025.

Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai hails from a family deeply rooted in Ambedkarite principles.  His father, R.S. Gavai, was a prominent political figure and a former Governor.  Choosing a path in law over politics, Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985 and steadily rose through the ranks, serving as a judge in the Bombay High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2019.

Known for his balanced judgments and commitment to social justice, Justice Gavai has been involved in several significant rulings that have shaped Indian jurisprudence.  His appointment is widely seen as a step forward in promoting diversity and inclusivity at the highest levels of the judiciary.
