Delhi High Court Halts Release of Udaipur Files, Awaits Centre’s Decision on Certification

The Delhi High Court has stayed the release of the film Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder until the Central Government reviews the CBFC certification under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952.

The order was passed on July 10, 2025, by a division bench of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela. The Court observed that since the petitioners have challenged the film’s content, they should first approach the Centre, and until a decision is made, the film cannot be publicly released.

The petitioners alleged that the film, based on a pending criminal trial, might adversely affect the legal proceedings and the right to a fair trial. The Court also directed a private screening for the petitioners’ lawyers in the meantime.

Judgment Date: July 10, 2025
Film: Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder
Status: Release stayed till Centre reviews CBFC certificate
Additional Direction: Advance screening for petitioners’ counsels
